Found Art: Spam

This came through my spam filter and I think its just gorgeous. Something about the traditional hyperlinks and the triple-pipes really does it for me.

George W. Bush Wrecked Your New Bicycle

February 23rd, 2008 · 2 Comments

Inspired by barack obama is your new bicycle as well as a few remixes of the same idea (e.g. McCain, Hillary, Steve Jobs) I felt like the meme was ignoring the elephant in the room. Hence, George W. Bush Wrecked Your New Bicycle

Note that (not unlike GWB’s presidency) the link doesn’t go anywhere. That will change as soon as I get around to it.

What to Install on a Macintosh Computer

February 13th, 2008 · 3 Comments

Installer

On Sunday, my Macbook hard drive died. Died. Fortunately I didn’t lose much data (perform regular back-ups, people!). I pulled out the dead HD, stuck in a working one, and got busy loading it up. Since I’m occasionally asked “what should I install on my new Mac?”, here’s what I put on it.

Apps I Can’t Live Without - my machine feels broken until these are installed

  • Quicksilver is the one piece of software I cannot live without. Some people categorize it as an Application Launcher, but it does a lot more. Free.
  • Textexpander lets you set customized abbreviations for your frequently-used text strings and images. I type “jjpb” for “jonathanpberger”, “,a” to make an anchor tag, and “ddate” for the current date (e.g. “080214”). Also fixes typos. Brilliant. $30. Worth it.

Open Frameworks at Eyebeam

February 12th, 2008 · No Comments

bad hd

This is the hard drive that failed on me in the middle Zach Lieberman’s Open Frameworks “knitting circle” on Saturday at Eyebeam. I was typing away, minding my own business, when I got the Spinning Beach Ball of Doom…and then the Beach Ball froze. I powered down, got a grey screen with a flashing “?” folder on boot, and that’s the last anyone saw of this macbook hard drive. I’ve since reinstalled the original 60g HD the macbook shipped with; we’ll see if I can settle for 60g on the portable machine.

Anyway, I had great notes from Zach’s talk, but they’re in Bit Heaven now. It was a nice, laid-back, nerdy Saturday with a high concentration of ITP and CDT students. Open Frameworks is kind of a Processing environment for C++: aimed more at the intermediate user than the novice, and WAY more powerful. I played around a bit with some of the examples and ended up with some really trippy generative stuff. I’ll post it as soon as I figure out how to get it on the web.

Protecting Privacy With Data Promiscuity

February 11th, 2008 · No Comments

The Badness of Dave’s Paranoid Brain led him to sound the alarm: get off facebook now! Get yr email onto a small ISP! Keep your data away from big companies that hold profits or subpoena’s above their user’s interests! The concerns are valid, but the remedy doesn’t scale. Its hard enough to keep the bits flowing without having to worry about the moral fiber of your service providers. There’s another way to play this: instead of taking on the task of policing everyone who has access to your data, let’s build systems to obfuscate our data. I’m thinking of systems modeled on Tor and spam. Yes, spam. More after the jump.

Hacking Separators Into the Leopard Finder Sidebar

Sidebar Separator in the Leopard Finder

The Finder’s Sidebar is a great place to put shortcuts to often-used folders, but it can get cluttered up pretty quickly.  Some dividers would really help.  A quick “how-to” on the flip…
